Post linux server information help(total newbie)

hey,

i am new in the Linux and server world and i need some knowledge from you guys.
Basically i want to use a linux server as router, dns server, download server, and share files in my home network.
I know this is a lot to begin with but i am not afraid for a challenge
Can you give me some basic understanding of how i can make this or why it is impossible to set this up.

As i said before i am a linux/server noob so take it easy on me:~)

thanks in advance,
Rik

Here is a good site for setting up miscellaneous servers on a Debian machine. It has a lot of generic information explaining how networking and servers work. If you decide to use a different distribution, the general knowledge will transfer even if some of the commands don't.

You do not say what distribution you are planning to use. My personal choice on server is CentOS, now on 5th version. If you want internet sharing from this system, you could do it either just with iptables, or use squid with it. For file sharing, you should need SAMBA/CIFS. You already know you want DNS. So Bind, or djbdns is what you need.
If you are new to all this, WEBMIN will help you with all the configurations.

Look into
wiki.centos.org
www.squid-cache.org
netfilter.org
http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html
