linux says password invalid

Hi all:)

here is my first post as a newbie, please ignore my ignorance about the terms:o

With my previous ubuntu 10.04, the terminal-like screen (one that opens with ctrl+del+f1) started to be the only thing that opened on the start-up. And it asked for my login name and password.
I never knew what it wanted, because my password that i'd been using was "invalid" or "incorrect".
So i installed it again as studio ubuntu 11.04.
it has no problem now, but when i used "ctrl+del+f1" it did not accepted my password again.

Please could some gentlemen tell me what on earth that password is? because i've chosen only one password (which is just one letter by the way, if it has any relevance), and it obviously is not up to the standard of that .... thing:doh:

i do not want to having to install again when the problem with my previous version happens, and i certainly don't want to give up on Linux.

thanks in advance

Its been quite a while since I used ubuntu

But as far as I remember by default you login as user and not a root user

So what is the login name you are giving?

i only have me as user:o
first it asks for my user id.
after that it want my password, upon which it declares invalid login; or it took more than 60 seconds, so have to start from square 1.
it's like "ubuntu-desktop user .....
