Linux parameter - $!

I can't search for this in Google because it's got special characters - could anyone tell me what this does?

I can't remember exactly what the command was, but it was passed as a parameter to another command.

I can't remember if it was on tcsh or bash, I'm afraid.

$! Expands to the process ID of the most recently executed background (asynchronous) command.

All Bash's special parameters are listed at http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/man...ial-Parameters (note that the leading $ is omitted as that's not technically part of the parameter's name).
