Why did you pick this system to learn Linux?
There are others such as Debian and Fedora which are much more friendly and allow you to customize.
This seems to be a Suse problem- only OEL I can see.
Since it is on a virtual machine, you may need to use a modified kernel.
I suggest using a livecd to learn the system or qemu as a virtual machine.
Qemu doesn't require a modified kernel and can use the hardware. No full virtualization though.

Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) is Oracle's Linux distribution. OEL is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and is binary compatible with Red Hat (not a fork!).

I agree 100%.

IF OEL is not a fork, how can it be on version 5.6? Current on RHEL is only 5.4.

Some more details would also be of help. What is the host OS? Which version of VMware and is it server or player? Which kernel are you installing? Are you installing 32bit or 64bit?

Good point...and OEL 5.4 was released Sept. 3, 2009. So perhaps OP is confused over exactly what software and version he's trying to install.

hi every body
thanx for your replies.
------------------
@Mr-Bisquit
i am actually going for oracle certification exam and i was going to install 10 g DB over this OEL and its quite compatible with it.
thats y i chose it.
------------------
@lazlow
sorry my bad .
its OEL 5.4
------------------
i am using windows xp sp2 32b in my laptop.
i have installed VMware 5
and i was installing OEL 5.4 32bit over this vm .
------------------
some more information .
i had actually installed OEL successfully over it and i actually worked with it for 2 or 3 days then again for my own practice i actually decided to re-install again and then this issue happened.

2-when i try to boot from the 1st cd it actually gave me the error that
"kernal panic: could not sync.reboot with noapic option"
when at i made my 1st installation(successful one) somehow for one time it dint give me this error.and after my successful installation every time i had to start it i used edit kernel and used to write "noapic" and it would start.

now when i tried to perform re-installation it did not boot from CD so again i used this "noapic" to start my installation.
does this have to do something with this ???

3-when installation completed and i hit reboot button i actually saw some lines of code and it was "disabling swap"
does this have to do with error ?? :(

i think i have provided you enough details.
plz help me i am not good with linux.
thnx in advance

hi
i am also pasting snapshots of error code .it might help u guys.

Mr-Bisquit 11-10-2009 09:42 AM

You need to pass the kernel arguments at boot when grub or lilo loads the kernel.

Better yet, here for you:

Looks like it may be having problems with ACPI. Try turning that off when you boot. try adding acpi=0ff at the end of your line with kernel=

oops just reread. try disabling your acpi in your bios. (I believe most have this option but not all Motherboards do.)
