linux or Solaris

Hi,

Could you please tell me is Linux is better than Solaris, If So why ??

Wifi-Fanatux 12-02-2009 01:14 AM

Depends

Solaris is a very good server, especially if you need an enterprise network. It works well in networking facilities and human resources as well as connecting to output data from processing equipment utilizing sparc system equipment. But not sure if you are refering to Solaris or Open-Solaris (the free open source community project).

I have tried open solaris (1-2 years ago), but when I tried to find packages, there weren't very many available.

Sun also offeres some training for the sun system, specifically sun solaris, that is System administration freebie, from the site. For this reason it is clever to try Solaris.

But why are we even comparing two different operating systems? Linux is NOT Unix. Solaris is Sun's Unix.

Both have their strenght and weaknesses. Which one is "better" depends on what your requirements are. Here is an interesting article comparing FreeBSD, OpenSolaris and Ubuntu performance:

Probably because comparing an OS with itself would be pointless ;)
Isn't the purpose of comparison to find out differences ?

Gnu/Linux is perhaps not Unix but definitely *nix.

Without a clear use or set of tasks required the question is meaningless.
Even then the question would be subjective.

I suggest you play with both and make a selection.

I would agree on that but question is "Solaris is better or Linux?"

It would completely depend on the needs.

Hi friends..
As a learner of linux and Solaris, my opinion is as follows..Please note, this is from a learner point of view,,,correct me if wrong:

1.Gnu/Linux is more straight-forward,simpler, and more stable than Solaris. I feel Solaris
is a sensitive os compared to Gnu/linux. Even small misconfigurations makes the Solaris system go to
maintainence mode (from my experience as a learner...)
2.Solaris is more complex than Gnu/linux in terms of configuration files...a single service can be started, restarted, or shutdown thru more than one way. So, we need to know more than one way of doing
things in Solaris.
3.As far as I have seen, Sun offers the best documentation. I have both the Red hat official
training guide and Sun's training guide. let me tell you, Red hat's training guide(for RHCE) is nothing
compared to the way Sun teaches you through its training guide.

4.As a *nix aspirant, it is always good to learn both these OSes..so that you yourself can decide, which is better..!

Absolutely but I was answering to your own question which was: "But why are we even comparing two different operating systems?"

linuxlover.chaitanya 12-04-2009 12:57 AM

That of my point was relative to the question and not on whole. Because the question is SO vague and pointless unless you know the actual needs of the user.

jlliagre 12-04-2009 03:37 AM

That's indeed a better answer than stating Gnu/Linux is not Unix while Solaris is which is questionable and doesn't matter anyway for the most of us.

When you are done (to the OP) comparing both, by simply *using* them, please post back here and tell us what you found, I want to know :)
