I installed my first Linux EVER this past Weekend (Mandrake 8.1)... And it was so cool. But now I'm very frustrated. :smash:
First of all, let me point out that I KNOW NOTHING OF LINUX, OR UNIX. I'm pretty good on DOS, Windows all versions from 3.0 to XP.
I have an NT Server with a MSPROXY installed. I've been looking everywhere for three things:
1.- How to connect your linux workstation to a NT Domain:
I modified the samba config file. I wrote in it Security = DOMAIN, Workgroup = MYWORKGROUP, Password Server = MYPDCNAME, Encrypt Passwords = YES.
Now, I read somewhere that I had to issue a command from a Terminal Window: smbpasswd -j <domain name> -r <pdc_name>, so i tried and opened a terminal Window and issued the command. BASH: smbpasswd: Command not recognized. I tried cd /etc/samba where i could find a file named smbpasswd and tried the same command from there. Same error. I can't do it. I don't get it. On the other hand, I could see my Windows 98 workstations mounting them on the Mandrake Control Center.
2.- Navigate through the MSProxy Server. I tried using konqueror and it ALWAYS gives me the Unknown Authorization Method when i put the proxy address in it. I read somewhere that it is a bug, and there's a way to solve it, BUT I DON'T get it. I tried Netscape and it stays in a loop saying website found... Waiting for answer and connecting to myproxyserver...
3.- HOW DO I INSTALL A PROGRAM IN THIS STUFF? I downloaded an MP3 Player and there's no way at all to set it up. I've heard that I have to compile the damn program, but i tried the make command and ALWAYS the same BASH error appears....
It's amazing how hard can be for a
to install anything and making linux work. Not to mention the problem I'm having with the HP printer when I tri to print something from the Spreadsheet program. IT PRINTS HALF THE PAGE and the printer stops with an error. The Test page goes out allright tho.
If ANYONE can PLEASE give me some directions here, I'll appreciate it. I've been doing a lot of
but its getting me mad to try to configure a workstation "guessing" which option will work on the KDE Shell to find out finally that I have to work in "console mode" to acomplish anything on Linux.
I was in the process of liking linux, but everyday that passes I try to make simple things to work on it, and it its amazingly frustrating.
Thanks in advance.../
