Linux on a portable hard drive

I have a portable hard drive and I would like to make it into a sort of mobile computer. My goal is to install linux on the portable hard drive and run it as the primary hard drive. I have found versions of linux that can be booted from USB, but most of them require that I make a live CD (i have no CD burner on my frankenstien computer) or that I can compile. I was wondering if anyone here knows how I can do a fresh install on the drive without already having a running version of linux.

Thanks for your help

You can boot your PC with installation CD and install Linux on this drive. The hard drive will be probably /dev/sda or /dev/sdb.
