Linux on a emachine m5310 laptop

I have been told that linux on laptops is a bad idea. I have an e machine 5310 that is running windows xp home and I hate windows( I know it took a while to get there but I'm there) I have a few distros( suse9.3 & 10, mandrake 10, debian something, slackware 10.2, and red hat 9) What is the best for laptops and will I have issues with running say suse 10 on said laptop. I'm not sure what info you need to answer the query but if requested I will respond

Thanks
Jason

The most problematic thing is power management (suspend etc.). The rest works well. I don't know how it is with modern laptop, I only own older laptops.

I have a toshiba something or another.. it's about 2 years old.. everything works great..

Power management is good, a bit fishy in some WMs, but other than that.. it's great

you'll probably have to get comfortable with recompiling the kerenl....

Where can I get some simplified info on recompiling the kernel. Also do you think that running slackware would be better or should I stick with my SuSE distro? BTW thanks for the replies and keep um coming if you can it is a great help

Where do I start to tinker with the power management settings and what is a good guide for the set up. Sry I am a super noob.

Google kernel recompile..

It sounds daunting, but isn't
You jsut need to make sure you have your kernel source installed.

SuSE is good, Slackware is good. it just depends on what you want the distro for.

there are power management options in the kernel that you can play with, you're also going to need some sort of cpu freq-scaling daemon (if your chip supports it) like cpufreqd...

The latest Suse 10 has great laptop support, give that a go. Check out http://www.linux-laptop.net/

ok I have slackware installed and kind of running. I do not have my touchpad mouse working at all. any help on that. Also I have no sound. All help would be wonderful

DeusExLinux 11-07-2005 10:32 AM

have you configured your sound through ALSA mixer, considering you are using alsa.

Copy your x config file, there's probably a mistake there for the mouse..

BUMP!!!

Does slackware still use the 2.4 series kernel?

With my laptop i need at least a 2.6 kernel for the sound card and such like to work properly (integrated ATI IXP)

jason.rohde 11-08-2005 10:31 AM

WIth Slackware 10.2 you have the option to load 2.4 or 2.6 kernel

OK I decided to run with SuSE 9.3 pro on my laptop after a few days of nothing working. Now I have only these probs
My Wireless card is not working( which I think I have figured out)
I want to play my DVD movies and I am trying it in Kaffine it starts and says you don't have permissions etc.
I think it is because of the dvd not the Kaffine
I am trying to find powerdvd for linux or a similar app. any thoughts?
