F1_help,

1. Is the CD actually bootable? Try it in another (prefferably newer) pc.
2. Is the 486's drive capable of reading the CD? Depending on how you created the CD, it may only be readable in CD-RW drives or new CD drives.
3. Have you told the 486's bios to try booting from CD first?

Hope this is of some help- I shall also be trying to convert my 486 soon :D

well, I have first tried it on a PIII , a newer machine.
so I think I am missing something. the distro I downloaded is said to be OK.

any ideas ?

Have you burned it as an ISO or have you just put the ISO file on a CD?
What I mean is: if you look at the contents of the CD you've created, does it just contain the ISO file you downloaded or a while load of files?

F1_help 07-09-2004 09:27 AM

I burned it using nero express, burn > data disk ?
is it correct ?

no in the cd it is just a one file and it's type is ISO.

what am I doing wrong ?

You just copied the CD image file to CD. That won't work.

You need to tell Nero to burn a disk from the image file.
Nero defaults to .nrg files, but just change the filter on the dialogue box to .* and you will be able to find the ISO to burn.

Good luck!

well, I have nero express in that it doesnot give a option to choose a extention. But it is listed and burned as ISO.
what can I do ?

Komakino 07-09-2004 11:57 AM

You need an option for "Burn disk image" or "create disk from image" something like that.

Have you configured X? If not, configure it with
Code:

xf86cfg --textmode
If you still have trouble, post the contents of /etc/X11/XF86Config and the contents of lspci.

On another note, on a 486, KDE is going to run very slow. If the graphics card is just as old, it will probably only run on the lowest of settings.

Komakino 07-09-2004 04:55 PM

Yeah, comp's right...you might want to consider using fluxbox, openbox or blackbox on a 486...though if you really want a desktop environment you could try XFCE, I've heard that's pretty gentle on the resources.
