Hmmmm well when I enter telinit 5 the comp just runs a bunch of script then stops.... perhaps I'm not waiting long enough, will try again after work

Have you tried pressing ctrl+alt+F7? It might just not switch the display to the one used by X.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 thru F6 gets you to text terminals, F7 thru F12 to graphical ones.

I didn't think it makes a difference but you could also try
init 5
instead of telinit 5

Woot

Alright I got the driver installed and TuxRacer works like a charm. Thanks to all who assisted, by the way, if there are people out there running Mandrake 9.1 here's a hint: you only need to worry about 1/3 (if even) of the stuff in Master C's sticky at the top.
The rest of the information must be for other apps.

Boy, I'm glad I'm running Mandrake
