linux not detecting hard drive
 

I bought a new samsung 320 gb harddrive sata harddisk.When I tried to install RHEL5/SUSE it is saying no harddisk found.

How to solve this issue ,plz anyone...

Is it detected in your bios?

You need to make a dos partition table, then the partitions on it.

Are there any other drives on the same controller? Are these detected?

It is showing in BIOS and windows xp is already loaded....

No only single Harddrive is connected to one controller

What mode is the controller in in the BIOS options ? Try changing it.

try from your Bios to switch to IDE controler

Could you give us more information?

How is the HDD connected, as HDD0 to the first SATA controller connection? Is it jumped as Master? Are there any other HDD or devices in the system? No RAID or anything else in the BIOS settings of interest? ACHI?

In the BIOS of my Gigabyte mother board there is a HDD autodetection function. Is there in yours and has the BIOS correctly found and configured the HDD to the right SATA? What does your BIOS report about the HDD and how does that compare with the specifications for the disk?

There is an XP installation on this HDD and it does boot? In that case I would expect that the BIOS is functioning as it should but may need some change in its setting, perhaps in SATA mode, as already suggested.

If you used a live partitioning CD, Parted Magic or GPartedLiveCD, will it boot, find, and partition the HDD?

tried everything,still while installing linux it's saying no harddrive,check ur hardware

Are you booting from a disk? It could be goosed. Is the bios set to the correct time? Could be a duff lead.Could be a duff hardrive.

Hmm, if possible can you pass your install kernel the option

all-generic-ide

?

I've had this problem with a SATA HDD on a system I put Fedora on once - the installer however, DID see the HDD, but when you tried to boot it just froze.

Turned out I had to pass the all-generic-ide option to the kernel in the GRUB options menu to get it to recognize the SATA HDD and boot off it.

What's your motherboard chipset for SATA?

I am having the same issue

I have a motherboard which is not detecting SATA type drives for fedora6 and somehow I have to use fedora 6.

To make is work while installing I passed “all-generic-ide pci=nommconf” and it installed, I updated the same to the grub.conf. It installed perfectly but it’s not rebooting even though the grub menu shows “all-generic-ide pci-nommconf” parameters.

If I run a rescue disk and in the option prompt if I type “linux all-generis-ide rescue” it works and shows all partitions as hdg1 and hdg2. I checked and my fstab is also aligned to hdg1 and hdg2.
Every things looks fine but I don’t know why the option all-generic-ide is not working if given in grub/menu.

Note: I tried all other options too in grub like acpi=off, pci=bios, pci=nomsi, pci=direct, pci=nobios, noapci nolapci etc etc though if it is installed with just “all-generic-ide pci=nommconf” it should boot also.

Any ideas on this is welcome.
