linux newbie

Hello everyone. I am new to linux and wanting to learn more. Right now I just want to get it to be functional (maybe I need to get used to it for that to happen) I am having problems with my webcam, mic and Skype. Can anyone show me the ropes and make it simple???

Welcome to LQ.

Linux is not harder than Windows, but it is different. Be prepared for it to be different.

Also be prepared for this: LQ members will often ask you to do something at the command line. This is not to be geeky; rather it's because different desktop environments, such as Gnome, KDE, Unity, and XFCE, may have may have different GUI utilities and menu arrangements, but the command line is a great leveler--it is pretty much the same regardless of distro.

We will be happy to help you with your issues. Please follow the guidelines for posting a question; they will help you provide information that will help others help you.

You might also get familiar with the lspci and dmesg commands--they can help you uncover details about your hardware for when you need to ask for help.

After a bit more work I found out that my webcam does work. When someone calls me on a video call I can hear them as well as see them. They are not able to hear me. So what steps do I need to take for them to be able to hear me?

The first thing to do is check your mixer (possible volume control, depending on the interface) settings. Microphones are often muted by default.

Also, test the mic with some recording software (you may have something installed by default) to see whether the problem is with the microphone input or with using the mic with Skype (which I assume is the program you are using for chat)

Also, please let us know what distro (your user agent icon says Ubuntu) and version and what desktop environment your are using.
