Exclamation linux networking with winXP




I am trying to get college linux (i think it is closest to slackware) to network with xp pro. I have no clue how to share files between them.

I have linux hooked up to a wireless router and winxp hooked up to a wireless card (linksys :WPC54G.

Well you need to set up a Samba Client and Server...
(Well not sure if you need the server? But it would make logical sense, I think.)

The easiest way to do this ( and I have done this my self ) is to setup windows XP to share a network resource like a internet conection. XP will then let you know that it changed it's ip address to 192.168.0.1 with subnet 255.255.255.0. To share the internet is easy. just run the samba server on the linux machine, go into your network settings and set your gateway to 192.168.0.1, you should also set the primary nameserver to that address aswell.

To share files. in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file there is a section called share definitions which you can edit. you may have to/ or want to set up a samba password file.

I just use a ftp server to tranfer files. access anywhere anytime over the net...

A good ftp server is pumpKIN (http://www.klever.net/kin/pumpkin.html#technical) thats what I used and it worked.
