Have you tried to read anything about TCP/IP networking? Your question is fundamental to how it operates. There are lots of books, lots of web pages that will go into excruciating detail on how TCP/IP networking works. You should really start there. After that, if you still have questions, come back and tell us, "I was reading <give a reference> and paragraph 6 didn't make much sense to me. What does <something> mean?" Best of luck!

This is the best networking tutorial I have found. It covers everything from octets to subnetting. http://www.ralphb.net/IPSubnet/index.html
Don't be fooled by the Web 1.0 look. It was originally on a *.edu site. I'm guessing the professor retired and took the site, unchanged, with him. It covers the basics of subnetting better than anything else I've found over the years. |
Thank you frankbell
