Linux Mint will not boot up

When the machine is turned on I get a black screen with:
GNU GRUB Version -12 ubuntu1
(blah blah)
grub>_
Type in "boot"
Get "error:you need to load the kernel first"

tried boot repair and got these messages
1)EFI detected
2)GPT detected. Please create a BIOS-Boot partition (>1MB, unformatted filesystem, bios_grub flag). This can be performed via tools such as Gparted. Then try again.
Alternatively, you can retry after activating the [Separate /boot/efi partition:] option.

What your seeing indicates that grub isn't finding the grub.cfg file.
type this at the grub prompt and see if you get a menu:
Code:
configfile (hd0,2)/boot/grub/grub.cfg
also what is the ouput of
Code:
set
at the grub prompt.
