Linux Mint install/live issue
 

mint version 9

when running the live disk the Mint logo shows up but looks like its ripping across the screen. first sign that this isn't going to go so well. tried installing it inside windows so i didn't have to make a partiton. same thing with the loading screen there also. once that screen is gone i'm left with a black screen.
so live and install not working. whats the deal?
i want to install this and mandriva. once i get all my files off this windows partition i was just going to format and install both but it looks like i need to figure out what the deal is. last thing i want is to format and then just have to toss xp back on here.

Err... This might sound obvious, but is the CD okay? Did you verify the checksum?

What you installed is a different way to install linux. I think that is the same as what is called wubi. It does seem to work well on some installs but fails on others.

If you want to fix it we'd need to know a bit more of what you see.

Did you turn off the computer completely and then try to reboot?

Do you get any kind of choice or menu?

If you want to check the cd you can reboot and press the space bar when you see the greem splash screen for menu choices. One is to test cd.

We might offer other ways such as virtual machines or pendrive installs.

there arent any errors when i checksum the disk.

i did reboot after install.
i got the first screen and then the 2ed on mine says "mint. and w/e their catch line is"
once that screen is supposed to jump into the desktop all i see is black.
that happens when trying to boot it from the HD and from the live disk.
i have reburnt this disk about 5 times once using my brothers new viao laptop, and using different media disks.

only one time have i ever been able to get to the desktop but it still looked messed up. that was using the live lxde disk i downloaded from them.

as for mandriva i jumped into the install for it and was checking that it knows what hardware i have.
everything was found excluding my modem (dail-up junk).
so since it sees my wifi would that be enough of a clue that once installed the wifi will work?
i ask because i really wanted to dump windows today. if you guys can figure out the mint issue then i can install that later.

I am going to guess slightly unsupported video card or monitor. Might have to boot to vesa or select screen lower resolution.

here are the specs.

the video is dual vga, i figured maybe once it loaded that it was displaying on the wrong vga. so i swapped, still a no go.
i have never seen the ripping look on an install before like this does. the mint logo is on the right side of the screen but it also is on the left looking like it's scrambled porn or something from back in the day. the right side isn't totally clear but enough to know what it says.
i would have to assume that it is the graphics. could the monitor actually do this?

this is driving me a little crazy. i don't want mandriva as my main distro as everyone says i should use something based off of ubuntu as my first linux experance. since mint has that back bone and codex for me to convert video and all that i figured why not. i think it also has vlc player and i use that constantly!

is there some kind of trick, edit, prayer i could do to get mint to submit to being my friend.. if need be ill do dumb stuff like poke it on facebook.

At some point in the boot of mint you should see something green or maybe dot's that are white and/or green. Press the space bar.

Vesa is what I said. Every (almost) video card supports an old system called vesa. Almost very disto has a way to put or select the vesa driver.

just installed mandriva 2010. now if i actually get mint to install will i have to configure anything or will it run threw. i ask because with the reading i have done, people talked about how they accidentally scrubbed out the user area.. drawing a blank on what it's called.. home or user partition? i would assume this is the area where your personal settings are?
i just want them to share w/e that area is, if that is possible.
also with mint does it have the same update type tool in it? i like the simplicity of being linux-dumb and yet the system is helping me along.

OK, lemme get this straight. You have and like mandrivia and you want to share some area between mint?

One thing I want to say is this. I don't make partitions just for /home or /var or anything. As to how your install is, you will have to carefully determine if you do have mounted partitions before you begin. Might have to write them down based on size as well as it's logical order. People on learning setup installs go crazy sometimes and make it way too complex. That is where the lost /home or whatever comes in.

As for sharing data that is another deal. Both systems ought to be able to mount the others filesystem. If you mean that you want some other partition to be shared then the steps are the same. You could get very fine with how you mount a filesystem and offer it to a user. You could mount a folder on a partition and offer it only at boot.

i wouldn't say "i like it". it's more like i am new to it and am currently frustrated, in the long run though at least i'm no longer on windows.
the mandriva format that made the areas of how it wanted to install had, what i would think, is a partition.. maybe its part of a single partition. really it doesn't matter.
seeing how lost i am in mandriva just makes me think before taking on anything else, maybe i should spend a crazy amount of time figuring out what i'm doing. like for instance, i hit ctrl-alt-f1 and was lost.. it was like watching the tv show lost, 5 billion questions and no way back to gui that i could see. god i hate feeling computer stupid, lol.

I only know this because I have spent 25 years making mistakes.

the ctrl deal would be to keep going up in numbers. Usually F1 or F7 or F8 does it.

We have to get the live cd working before we try to install.

Did you understand what I meant about finding out what partitions you have?

Did you ever try the space bar at boot?
