Linux Mint 13 under windows
 

Trying to install Linux Mint 13 64 bit onto a windows 32 bit using Daemon tools. Is this even possible?

You need to write the image to a dvd and boot through it. Not possible using daemon tools.

You could actually mount the iso in windows with some app and run the wubi install.

Mounted in Daemon tools, but no go with WUBI...I have about had it with the mint13 32 bit installer....It installed fine, but it keeps throwing me into a console without kde. I tried to kstart but i don't even have permissions for the root after signing myself in. I AM administrator. Really don't like Linux...installed it back in 2001 no problems..but still installations were sucky. I am a noob, but I do know what I am doing with computers...Linux just doesn't make much sense these days. I remember back in 1978 logging into mainframes with punch cards and that seemed easier!

Mint is one of the very "new user" friendly distros

wubi though is a mess , do not use it


do a NORMAL dual boot install

but MS's polices with OEM on win7 is ROYALLY messing things up

google the issue with the hidden "rescue" partition on win7


Use the built in Win7 tools to shrink windows "new and improved" NTFS formated drive
MS's tool for this is the best on win7 do to the new ntfs format

shrink it by about 50%
leave it unformatted -- if possible--
if not then the Mint installer can format it to "ext4"
and install mint to the second partition and install the Linux bootloader to the FIRST linux partition and bootstrap win7 to it

this is all covered in the documentation

BUT the hidden windows "rescue" partition that INCLUDES the MBR is causing all kinds of problems
and is making installing NON Microsoft OS's a pain
( JUST LIKE Microsoft WANTS)

I got the problem solved with an addition to the Grub script for OS selection. SO! the problem wasn't me..it was with b43 wirless cards. I don't have one, but use b43.blacklist=yes and it worked. I believe the problem was with a gfx card, because my screen went to resolution of 1600 and up...switched that as well after getting into mint13 and now i boot just fine.

You might consider using free virtual machines. One a newish system they will run Windows and linux near native speeds. It is a very easy and safe way to install and test linux.

Thanks Jefro! and Mod. I just got Oracle Virtual Box and it's great. I fixed the issue with black screen on the dual booting issue. Mint runs great now. I have also installed Android on the Oracle VM and will try Mint13 there as well, however running 2 OS's side by side is a little scary since it is XP and it's not 64 bit, so memory issues. Thanks guys for your help!!

I am just too lazy anymore. I have been in love with VM's for a long time for other reasons but lately since I have fast enough hardware it just makes it too easy to create and use a new OS. Yep, memory is a must on this way. Usually I set any live cd to 1G if they have an advanced UI. Maybe the next computer you get will have 64bit and maybe 6 gig or so.
