Search these forums, there are numerous threads regarding your modem setup. What filemanager are you using to access floppy and drag'n'drop files?

I'm using 8.2 also and unfortunately found that drag and drop to/from the floppy via the GUI causes glitches - just a minor bug that'll get sorted. In the meantime, I found that copying via the commandline works a treat - try that. Get back if you aren't sure how to. (BTW, the Mdk docs are quite good if you're stuck sometimes.....)

As far as the modem goes, isn't it recognised in the Mdk Control Centre?

ok that helped some and thanks guys but i still cant make it work. the help files in linux are good,,,no there great. but i still dont understand alot. I need to find the exact steps to placing,,,I believe linux says "mounting" a floppy to the "root/user/shared/speedtouch" folder in the sys. I have tried every format i can find. I dont see it in the linux help files or on the net. I just read where mandrake 8.2 has the kernel i need already i just need to get the patch in the folder. ..I think As far as the "compiling" I never done it before. Im lost as a goose in a snow storm. The linux sys is moor stable that the windows i got so i keep trying cause i want to use it .

Assuming you have the patch on a floppy, you obviously need to get it onto your system - try copying it by the commandline using the 'cp' command, ie

change to the floppy directory (using cd >path _to_floppy< )
then
cp >patchfile_name< >path_to_directory<

....if the folder /usr/shared/speedtouch already exists, you can use this path.

Hopefully this will put the file where you say it needs to be.

BTW, what kind of file is this 'patch'? Is it a tar file, .txt file or even an rpm file?? The installation differs for each type.

It would probably be even better if you can post the message that tells you to apply the patch, as well as the patch file extension.......

One last thing - you say Control Centre didn't find the modem - did you try the wizard in Network > Connection or are you relying on the hardware list?

It may be greek at the minute, but it's easier than it sounds It wont be long before you get Windo$e out of your hair.....
