linux/mac compatibility

Hi everyone

I'm am interested in installing Linux as my operating system on my Mac. However, my partner is scared I will wreck the computer, and as such will not let me play around. I was wondering if it's possible to keep all the Mac operating system and have Linux on the side.

The reason I need to use Linux is that I want to try my hand at programming games (Playstation games, hopefully). I have begun learning the C and C++ languages, but am finding it impossible to find a free compiler compatible to a Mac (if you know where to find one, please say).

Also, I read that in order to program Playstation games, you need to buy a special "PS2 Linux" addition, which I am not willing to purchase yet, but if all goes to plan I will in the future. So by using Linux now I hope my game one day could make the jump pretty smoothly.

I would be most grateful to anyone with any advice.
Cheers, Luke

Please don't post the same questions twice. It just makes it harder to respond and leads to confusion. It's also against the rules you agreed when you joined this site.

I'm closing yjos thread. The second one (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=73347) remains open and please send all replies there.
