If you really want to learn linux get a distro like slackare. With slackware you will learn the command line, how to compile software you want, how to resolve dependencies.

But if you want something easy going then ubuntu, linux mint, fedora, and many others.

Google for online books.

Here is an excellent tutorial for learning basic linux commands: http://linuxcommand.org/learning_the_shell.php
If you really want to learn how to use linux, you must learn to master at least the basic linux commands.
Here is another basic beginners site. It is perhaps a bit outdated, but the content is still relevant: http://www.tuxfiles.org/
There are a great many distro specific sites that will teach you how to install and use that distro. For example, here is an excellent site for starting out with Ubuntu: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/

Slackware is the best distro for learning linux. However, it may be a bit daunting for complete beginners. You can read the Slack Book if you are interested: http://slackbook.org/html/index.html
Much of the Slack Book is useful even if you do not intend to use Slackware.

Write back if you need more help.
And welcome to the LQ forums!
