linux killing my hard drives

Hello I bough the red hat bible to learn about linux. I first had problems with the first set of cd's. Now I have tried to install it one a 40gb western digital drive. The drive isn't even being recognized by the bios anymore. So I took a 14 gb hd out of another machine the drive had just been formated in a 2000 machine. I ran the install deleted and let it automatically create the partitions for the installation. It completed installation and now hangs every time I try to boot from the hard drive. When I use a linux boot disk I have that I made with one of the installations. I can boot up and see my cdrom's and floppy but no hd. Can anyone explain to me what might be happening?

My first suspect (after unplugging and replugging all components to eliminate bad seating of cards and ide cables) is faulty memory. Have you ran a memory test?

Also, have you checked that your hard drives are jumpered correctly? -- J.W.
