Linux Kernel Issue

I'm fairly new to linux, and am trying to rebuild my Red Hat linux 7.2 kernel. I am able to successfully build the kernel, however when I try to load it, my keyboard (which is USB) doesn't work. I can use a PS/2 keyboard without problems. The USB keyboard works fine with the kernel created originally during Linux Installation. Any suggestions on why?

Based on the information I've found on the web here's how I built the kernel:
in /usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10/ I run "make xconfig"
I've tried leaving the default configurations and changing various ones
after configuring I run "make dep" followed by "make clean" then I "make bzImage", "make modules", and "make modules_install"
then I "cp /arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-test"
and I startup the kernel using grub

Anything I'm missing?

Are you sure you included USB support? It may be the reason.

I had a similar problem with ntfs support once. I kept forgetting to include it when building the kernel.

I second Mara's motion.
