I'm currently running Windows XP profesional and am interested in trying out Linux. I have a version of the linux kernel and was wondering if i could use linux with only that? or do i have to buy a a version of linux like mandrake etc?

Linux cannot operate with only the kernel. Linux as you know it is the kernel and many GNU apps that make it work. Thats why alot of people will refer to it as Linux/GNU. Because the projects are really combined. So to make a complete operating system, yes you must get a distro such as mandrake. But don't worry, this isn't microsoft, and you can find nearly every distro for free. If you just want to try linux than get a live cd like Mandrake Move, or knoppix. Then you can just pop in the cd and boot from that and play around in linux. And when your done, just reboot, remove the cd, and your back to you windows environment like nothing ever happened

With a bare kernel you won't be quite able to
enjoy a Linux-experience ... in fact, I doubt
you'd be able to install it.

No, there's many freely downloadable distro's.
You shouldn't go and buy it before you know
whether you like it. (Fell free, however, to support
development if you like what you get ;}). ...

You can build it yourself if you're so inclined.

get enough information about debian,and you can build your debian linux with only two floppy disks. it's much easier than lfs.

Debian's great, but it can be a aaslkdfj;laskdf hassle to set up, especially on new hardware where you're going to need to install a new kernel anyway. Redhat is easier, and knoppix is pretty simple if you're looking to start out and don't have a mate who already knows some stuff.

Your questions means that you really are a newbie. Go and get a copy of Mandrake or Fedora and give it a go. It will only cost $5 or $10.
