Linux installed, linux partitions lost, computer scragged, need serious help.

Installed SuSe 9.1 from FTP last night and for some reason it wouldn't load a gui for me...so I reboot back into windows, posted a msg in another thread asking for assistance for it see if anyone could help me there. Then I rebooted because my comp started acting glitchy. Rebooted only to find that it decided it didn't like the linux partitions... apparently anything involving a grub bootloader was removed.

The comp attempts to load the grub bootloader but not finding a linux OS or anythign resembling the complete grub gives me a limited console interface to whatever I have left. My only salvation is that I had the SuSe live eval cd nearby so I loaded into it and am now posting this msg.

Is there ANYWAY whatso ever to restore my comp so I can get back into windows and not lose say oh...about 2 years worth of stuff from video files to sound files to pictures, emails, logs, etc that I need? Or am I totally fubared?

Take into account I can't even find my oem cds that came with my comp as they're in NC and I'm FL at the moment. Only have the 2000 upgrade cd that I used to upgrade from Win ME to 2000. So I don't have any sort of winOS thats bootable.

*sighs* Someone please show mercy upon this ignorant fool and help him.

Did you by any chance run scandisk?

What I recommend is to get a DOS boot disk and do an fdisk /m (I think... been a long time) which will reset the MBR and if windows is on the first partition of your disk it should then boot straight into windows.

Good Luck.

To boot windows from grub (assuming windows is intact and on hda1):
grub>chainloader (hd0,0)+1
grub>boot
The first '0' in (hd0,0) determines drive number, the second, partition number.

It is 'fdisk /mbr'.

Well I'm back into my all consuming all controling M$ partition once again running win2k. I'm trying to build a bootdisk at the moment so I can run fdisk /mbr against it.

Errr... Incorrect DOS version? *blinks* Gah! Must destroy Gates...anyone got a tactical nuke I can launch against Redmond by chance?

Thanks for the info on the chainloader aaa. Much appreciated. Out of morbid curiosity, anyone wanna help me attempt a reinstall of SuSe 9.1 FTP? Didn't think so lol...
