Windows has most likely overwritten LILO, Grub or whatever Linux boot loader you were using. You can use your Linux installation disk, boot in rescue mode and reinstall grub or lilo.

P.S: do a quick search in this forum for detailed info on this matter. This is a very popular question.

Regards!

I don't know what distro you are using but most of the ones I have tried allow some kind of rescue mode on the installation disk. Which will try and save the Linux system already on the computer.

It should allow you the option to reload that when you reinstall the linux OS. I used it many times when I was trying to install Madrake 9.2.

First, try searching. I said it is a popular question. Second, when asking for help, try to be very descriptive. So far, you didn't mention which boot loader you had (because it's different to reinstall lilo or grub), which distribution you are using (because some has rescue mode), nothing.

Read this:

then search the forum for "reinstalling the boot loader". We can't simply ssh or telnet your machine and repair it for you :)

Moved: This thread is more suitable in <Insert Forum Name Here> and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

You use RedHat (if you still use the same distro as when you posted a number of times in the RH forum). For RedHat Grub is the default, but it can be easily changed, so you may also have LILO.

Use your RH installation cd and boot into rescue mode. When you get command prompt try
grub-install

That's the easiest option, but may work. If you see no error messages, reboot and see if the menu is on its place.

hi all,
thanx for the reply; sorry for not posting the ques in a proper way. actually i use redhat 9.0 with grub as boot loader. as u people said, i tried to boot using the linux cd to rescue mode, but it gives an error and exit, saying kernel is not found.

thanx
viji

It's not a very good situation. Do you have any boot floppy (maybe left from installation)?

vijirin 09-28-2005 11:39 PM

sorry no, i don't have it!!!

So you need to get one. It may be a boot disk, cd-based distribution (like Knoppix), another copy of your installation cd etc.
