Linux install on new harddrive - Ubuntu 8.10

I'm having a problem installing Ubuntu 8.10 on a new harddrive. (1TB Western digital purchased OEM) I'm not sure if this is the 64bit version or not, but it won't run live either.

I had a hard time with this cd before when trying to install on a now disassembled desktop. The cd installed fine on two laptops (a 2 year old presario and a new hp g60).

It's an intel motherboard w/ core 2 duo processor, 8GB PNY RAM, and there is nothing at all installed on the HD. Since this is the old CD drive from the disassembled desktop (I don't know the make), I'm thinking it could be this particular CD drive. However, before I buy something I may not need, I wanted to here other opinions and such on the matter.

This is the first computer I've built. First mobo, hd, processor, etc, so I don't know all of the fine details regarding anything I may need to do to the hard drive or if a 64bit cd is absolutely necessary.

Thanks!

If you want to access all that ram you'll want a 64bit Linux install anyway!

Sounds to me like a crappy CD drive to be honest, if that disc worked in other machines. Does it even start to boot? If not, could be the bios config...

Best way of finding out is doing an integrity check on the burned media (say, md5sum) before using them.
