Linux Install doesn't work

A year ago I installed Suse 7.0 on my PC and all was fine. I didn't do much with it and tried to reinstall recently, but nothing is working.

When I try to boot from a Suse CD (7.0) or diskette (7.2) it loads the kernel, then I just get a blank screen.

I've tried booting from a Debian CD and get a page of errors including "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address bfcfdcc7" and "Bad ESP value."

My PC is a 2-year old Gateway with an 800Mhz Athlon processor. I have tried taking out just about every component I can whilst still keeping a working system : all the adapters (except display), extra memory, one of the hard disks, CD writer, all USB, serial & parallel devices. It makes no difference. Even with all these removed, I get exactly the same problem.

Currently the PC has Windows 98 on it and works OK with that.

Welcome to LQ, Iainr.

Is this the same system as you installed SuSE onto a year ago? I don't know how SuSE fairs with Athlon processors, but I know that RedHat (certainly older versions) sometimes wouldn't play nicely with them.

Yes, it is the same system and even the same Linux CD that worked a year ago.

Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to boot from that old installation any more, though whether that's the same problem as with the CDs I don't know.

Some more progress...

I managed to get the display working so I could at least see error messages from Suse.

Now when trying to boot from a Suse 7.0 LILO diskette, I get lots of error messages including "Bad EIP value".

Searches on the web suggest it might be BIOS related, but nothing more specific.

Any ideas anyone?

Solved!

Problem solved. Upgrading my BIOS to the latest version seems to have fixed the problem. Both SuSE and Debian now boot fine.

Still no idea why it worked last year though
