ok, can you please tell me about it - because i've spent 80% of my monthly download limit just in tonight's linux trials... this is the first time i've touched linux ever in my life - i recently discovered virtual PC and thought it's a fabulous opportunity to try linux.
unfortunately, being so green, none of the downloads (.iso format) seem to work for me. i have the memory set to 512 Mb (i read somewhere that's optimum for installing OSes on VPC)
* SuSE setup files constantly tell me that i can't run 64bit software on a 32bit system (i SWEAR both iso's i downloaded were 32bit versions!) and freezes.
* fedora just freezes at a screen resembling bad tv reception.
* debian keeps crashing VPC ("An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered. The virtual machine will reset now").
* i just downloaded a version of mandriva - it asks whether i want to boot from "spring 2009" or the harddisk, then freezes on a completely black screen
... i'm at my wit's (and download limit) end! WTF am i doing wrong?? i was going to use this as a linux trial to maybe switch from windows, or have as a dual boot, but if this is the way linux installs for real, then there ain't no way!
can anyone help?
(edit: i just downloaded virtualbox. during installation, it warns that it "will reset network connection and temporarily disconnect you from the network"....
will it then re-connect me? i'm not confident i'll be able to reset all the settings myself!)
