Hallo!!!!!!
am trying to setup the live CD Ubuntu 7.10 in virtual PC 2007.
I found instructions and manuals but I have a serious problem........
I boot from live cd normally, the starter desktop shows normally but the mouse(eiand the keyboard) doesn't work:confused!!!!!!!!!!!
I tried left Atl but..nothing!!!!
Please, suggest me something I really need it for my final project for my diploma!!!!!!!!!!
To work properly in a virtual machine, most operating systems have to be configured to know that they are going to be running in a VM, and what kind of VM it will be. When they do this, they can cooperate with the so-called "hypervisor."
The "hardware discovery" routines of a standard distro also might not work in a VM, depending on just how thorough the VM-writer chose to be. Consequently, you might need to configure your Linux kernel very specifically to match the environment it will be shown.
Certainly, Linux does run well in VMs... that has become the most-frequent way to do almost all kinds of kernel testing.
I suggest that you try 'VirtualBox'. You will find the setup a lot easier plus the functionality is great.
This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just Slackware® links!
Onebuck and bdfy are right. Virtual PC is not going to work, or at least not very well for what you're trying to do. Check out Sun's Virtualbox its free and works great! I use it for BSD, Linux, Windows Server, Windows XP & Vista development. I love it in my opinion its got better memory management the VMware's desktop or server.
To run a Live CD you don't need virtual PC 2007 - just boot from the CD, your hard disk install will remain untouched.
If you need the Linux system and your usual environment to run next to each other, then either tweak the virtual PC settings for I/O (mouse/keyboard) or get (as already suggested) VMware or VirtualBox. A lot of Linuxes are availabe as VMware images, making it even easier for you.
What is your diploma about? Maybe it gives a hint for more reasonable and helpful suggestions in this matter.
Thanks anyway all of you for your advises.

ok, can you please tell me about it - because i've spent 80% of my monthly download limit just in tonight's linux trials... this is the first time i've touched linux ever in my life - i recently discovered virtual PC and thought it's a fabulous opportunity to try linux.
unfortunately, being so green, none of the downloads (.iso format) seem to work for me. i have the memory set to 512 Mb (i read somewhere that's optimum for installing OSes on VPC)
* SuSE setup files constantly tell me that i can't run 64bit software on a 32bit system (i SWEAR both iso's i downloaded were 32bit versions!) and freezes.
* fedora just freezes at a screen resembling bad tv reception.
* debian keeps crashing VPC ("An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered. The virtual machine will reset now").
* i just downloaded a version of mandriva - it asks whether i want to boot from "spring 2009" or the harddisk, then freezes on a completely black screen
... i'm at my wit's (and download limit) end! WTF am i doing wrong?? i was going to use this as a linux trial to maybe switch from windows, or have as a dual boot, but if this is the way linux installs for real, then there ain't no way!
can anyone help?
(edit: i just downloaded virtualbox. during installation, it warns that it "will reset network connection and temporarily disconnect you from the network".... will it then re-connect me? i'm not confident i'll be able to reset all the settings myself!)
