Are you sure it's "freezing". On my system that has some decent specs, it takes a few minutes for Mandrake to boot up (the only downfall). I turn it on, and come back 10 minutes later. Really. Unless the init is actually giving you a kernel panic error message, I'd let it run for a few. It's creating DevFS entries, and getting your computer setup.

So try just letting it run for a good few minutes, and see if it "snaps out of it" and eventually gets booted up.

Cool

Yeah try that wait for a minute; that's sorta what happend to me on redhat, It just "LOCKED UP" on me, i was like "NOOOOOOOOO" then it restated it self back in it's liquidy smooth state 8)

Did you make a "boot floppy"? Did you try it?

suggestions

do this first

do a clean reformat first and install windows *2000 pref or XP works* with a 10 gig partion.

install boot it up and install your drivers ect.

now install Red Hat 8.0 *if your up to trying everything red hat 8 has the most hassle free installl system.*

install with automatic partioning system and use GRUB as your boot loarder make shure DOS is selectable before you continue to install.

install reboot and see if the magic happens.

if not please post here. And I see what I can do for ya.

*DONT FORGET TO MAKE A BOOT DISK*

Yah. Those ``unknown'' brand motherboards'll do it every time. :-)

Say, avatar3o: Are you sure you can't find some markings on the motherboard to help identify it? I can't remember running across any m'boards or controller cards that were so generic that you couldn't identify the manufacturer. You'd be surprised how much you can find from a Google search on a part number.

Even if it's a FCC # (can look up company associated with the numbers).

I use slackware www.slackware.com
seems to work with EVERYTHING

jrdioko 02-27-2003 05:29 PM

Slackware is hard to set up at first (at least for a newbie like me), but it does seem like a great distro. :)

I had a similar problem to that, all I did was mess around with the install and I finally got it working.
