Linux games running slow?
I am running redhat7.2
When I try to play Tux Racer it is too slow to even try to play. My friend also has the same problem. Anybody know what this could be? |

Let me know if you need any help installing them as i hace experience with installing the NVIDIA kernel and GLX drivers.

yup you habve to get those drivers and possibly OpenGL or DRI (dri.sf.net) as well. I have the same problem. On slack 8 im trying to play soldier of fortune but i can't get hardware acceleration to work with my voodoo2. I installed drivers, and openGL libraries and i edited XF86Config so it loads both dri and glx
Load "dri" Load "glx" But still no luck. Soon i will upgrade my comp and if i cant get it to work then i will come here for some help. Hope that helps ohh yeah, your games are running slow because they are using software not hardware acceleration, same prob as mine... |
i'm havin the same problem...i have :
SiS 6326 AGP Video Card Pentium II 300Mhz (gettin a Pentium III 667Mhz in a lil bit) some generic PCI sound card but sound isn't my problem 256MB of PC100 RAM 20 GB hard drive Mandrake 8.1 does anyone know where i can get opengl and glide drivers for my video card? i heard somewhere that linux doesn't support AGP...is that true? also, i know that (with the exception of wind*ws XP) windows can only handle so much RAM....is that true for linux or can you cram as much as you want? thanks, Brad |
I have Mandrake Linux 8.1 and it supports several thousands of hardware. Hardware that is randomly picked might be on the Mandrake's list but check to make sure. Drivers or kernels are about one year behind of new hardware. Audigy, Geforce 3, Radeon 8500 are not fully supported yet. LINUX programmers haven't got their hands on the new hardware because of prices and time.
AGP is supported in LINUX but download updated kernels from x86free.org site to get full 3D support. The hard part is compiling and installing those kernels. People said compile and install. That is easy for them to say. In my opinion, LINUX programmers need to explain every step (in detail) to compile and installing their program. Also where should the source code be decompress to. If you told your employee to compile your source code for a favor when you are out for lunch. When you come back, your employee did not do it because he or she doesn't know where to start. LINUX handles memory better than any windows OS. If a program in LINUX needs 256 megabytes of memory. Linux will give it. If your system doesn't have that much, it will use swap memory. Type top in the console. This will give a rough idea of memory resources and CPU percentage. |
