I think the topic is too broad, and if the instructor won't narrow it, or give you a little bit more specific focus, don't worry too much. Whatever you do, be positive in your presentation and leave room for future discussion. No one can tell you all you want to know here in a few paragraphs. Really, this is quite deep, and some of us (me included) won't use Windoze for moral reasons, not to mention that most Linux OSs just run better than any Windoze OS.

If you'll search here in LQ, and at
www.google.com/linux , I think you'll find plenty of opinions to that question. In each search result, just right down what is "fact" and throw out the rest. This will build into some useful information, to which you can establish facts. And don't forget that you can d/l a Linux distribution for FREE! And there is no license fee, not activation junk, and the updates for security fixes happen very fast! That's because the code is available for everyone to see, and so the flaws are found quickly.
Mirco$loth basically fixes security problems when it's in their best interest, not the consumer's best interest. They deny and avoid taking responsibillity until they simply can't skirt the issue any longer. In the meantime, thousands of computer users, servers, etc. have lost valuable data and work time doing damage control to a badly built system, for which they paid a lot of money. I gotta stop...rant starting...

Samba is just a tool, so don't let that throw you. Don't spend your time telling HOW-TO and configuration information about Samba - just explain very quickly and briefly what Samba stands for, and what it does.

If we didn't give you the link already, go to
www.distrowatch.com and look them over, then go to their prospective websites and let the distribution tell you for what specific purpose, if anything, it is designed.
Linux is the kernel, and the applications that are packed with it make up a distribution. You can customize
almost any Linux distribution to use as a server. The reason Debian is suggested quite frequently is because it has a very, very stable release called Woody, and when you install Woody you have very few packages installed; and very few services running. The less services running, the more secure and less likely you are to have problems.
