linux "executables!

Can anybody tell me how to identify a llinux "executable" by its name?

In windows, executables usually end in "exe" of course ... there doesn't seem to be that convention in linux.

Is it possible to identify a linux executable merely by its name, and knowing nothing else abou tit?

not by it's name, by it's right!

rwx-rwx-rwx
R= Read
W=Write
X= eXecute

Example :

You are in /bin :
type ls -l
You will have

rwx-rwx-rwx ... ... ... EXAMPLE
usr grp others
So EXAMPLE is executable

Enjoy...

Another way to find out what it's MEANT
to be (sometimes the permissions don't
actually match the purspose) is to use the
tool called
file

It will tell you whether it's an ELF executable,
some other form of executable binary (a.out,
old linux format) or a script of some sort.

Cheers,
Tink
