Linux equivalent of Palm desktop?
 

I have a Treo telephone which uses the Palm Desktop (which I used for years before getting the Treo and think it is a model of simplicity- does just exactly what I need). I would like to phase out of Windoze over time which means finding substitutes for the stuff I have been using. Otherwise, I have to keep a Windows version around which I would rather avoid.

Does anyone have any suggestion and also any experience with the proggie put forward? TIA.

Looks like that might be the one though it isn't stated whether it will synch with all versions of Palm, much less the Treo.

I guess the more immediate question is, which distro version might work best with Ubuntu. Generally speaking it surely would be the Debian version, but the one listed is from 2002 and that is way too old. The latest are for SuSE 9.3 and SuSE 10.0 RPMs, or Slackware 10.2.

Anybody got an idea which is likely to be more compatible? TIA.

I used J-Pilot on Fedora. It will sync with all versions of Palm, including wirelessly with those that support WiFi.

As far as installation, from the Ubuntu menu Applications->Add/Remove, select the 'Show unsupported Applications' checkbox, and search for 'J-Pilot'.

For those who prefer KDE, there is also the combination of Kpilot (synch tool, a frontend for the command line pilot synch tool), and kontact (or korganizer).

Be careful with some palm models, such as those based on Palm 5.x. There are some work-arounds you need to use. Some Palm utilities, such as AvantGo, etc. may crash the synch. Additionally, make sure you set up the synch to allow the pilot top over-ride, otherwise you may wipe your palm on the first synch (I did that once). Also, you might have greater success in pointing the synching tool you use (either kpilot or jpilot) to the usb port which it attaches to... rather than /dev/pilot . A common example would be something like /dev/usb0, but it depends on how your distro sets up the file structure for usb.

I am using Kpilot, and kitchensync and works great dispite some litle things, but I managed to use it under udb and bluetooth sync. And also do doc to go features too.
