linux distros for old P3 mchines
I have a pentium 3 machine and I want to install linux, it has about 10Gb memory and can but pretty slow. I wondered if anyone could recomend a version of linux that would be good to try out on this old machine.

I assume that by 10Gb memory , you mean 10gb of hard drive.
Any distro will run, as long as you have 64mb+ of ram. 128 is better. I run gentoo perfectly on a p3 800mhz with 256mb ram. runs really well. hamish |
depends on how knowledgable you are.. but check out ArchLinux.. sometimes thought of as "Gentoo without the compile times" or "Slackware with a nice package manager/updater"
It's optimized for i686 distro's so it has better performance, but won't install on an old Pentium MMX notebook I have! lol Anyways, It's a little bit of work to get set up.. but after that.. maintaining it is easy.. Though, if you can install Gentoo.. you ca surely install Arch.. :) |
