Linux Desktop connected on a Windows Server Active Directory?
 

Hello,

I am new to Linux world and i have little to no idea about what im talking. so please be nice...
We are planning to change our Desktop's OS from XP to a certain Linux Distro. But the problem is we would like to keep the Windows Server 2003 as possible. So the scenario would be, all linux Desktop would be connected to a Windows Server 2003 and Using the Active Directory of windows server.
My question is; Is it possible to have this kind of connection? Is it too complicated to have this kind of connection? Is there an easier way?

On a simple level I was able to connect an Ubuntu based laptop to my work network running Active Directory
and by installing an AD component from Synaptic I appeared in AD.

However, on a more complicated level, all the GPOs associated within AD threw a huge spanner as of course they were all set
to make the necessary changes (and run a heap of vbscripts (bleh)) so none of that worked :( Is it possible, not sure,
hopefully someone else will be able to help with that.

MS has a good business case for an AD. I'll agree to that. Many features are not as easy to replicate with linux. Some are not implemented. You may need to change your perception of the business IT structure if you want to switch to linux.


Might look at some of 2x's (2x.com) products to see how they are using linux to connect to an AD.

There are other companies offering all sorts of virtual applications and virtual desktops too that kind of confuse the landscape.
