Linux Debian Version 5 = [5.984061] hdd: drive not ready for command
 

I have installed Linux Debian V_5.
The installation on 24.10.2009 was extremly painless, as I was hooked into my router and scored, all the files neded, for a current update program install. But wait! I am not smiling yet! After removing the installation CD from the drive, and letting the system, boot from the HDD, I ran into these messages:
[5.983788] Status Error=0x20
[5.983941] Failed opcode was: unknown
[5.984061 hdd: drive not ready for command

Mind, That I am completely stuck, atthis point, and the computer, wont let me continue, without, waiting, for what seems, like minutes, before the computer timed out, and after some time, I was offered a choice, enter admin password for maintenamce, or control-D I entered PW at the prompt, and was denied access, and I resorted to Press, Control-D, and finally entered the desktop, where I saw with delight, the actual Linux desktop.
As, I was inside the desktop trying to get to know the system, I was getting a Very Naggin error in a box on the screen:

Cannot eject volume, and these stack up! I x them out and a few seconds they return, and stack up, and completely piss me off,

What can I do to get rid, of the Cannot eject volume messages, and get on with this installation. First I need step by step, guide to fix these problems, from some of you out here in this forum. The last this in need is to revert by to XP on this third machine. This third computer, is for Linux, as I want to learn Linux, and carry on, with the studies.

I have a Compaq Deskpro EN with a 900 mhz Pentium 3 processor
SDRAM 512 mb, at 133mhz with a dvd-rom,and CDRW from sony, and it wont let me eject the drawer out to load a cd, as I tried. I can only load it with a cd if I am re-booting, whilst POST is happening.

I thank you all in advance, as I am happy to be finally studing, and using linux. (typed this on one of my WIN XP termials)

I am curious, as to what security programs to keep me safe whilst surfin the net, like Firewall, anti-virus, programs for Linux, as I tried to find some, but could'nt find any.

Do you have any other media plugged in? Or is there anything in the CD drive? It almost seems like during the install, maybe the CD was removed from the drive before it was supposed to. Or that it wasn't unmounted properly when done installing. Not sure why that should carry over after the install though. Can you temporarily unplug the CD/DVD drives and then reboot and see if you still get the error?

Also, what is the output of cat /var/log/syslog? That may have some more clues.

As for security programs, a firewall is built into the linux kernel. It is called iptables and can be configured by the command line or through numerous graphical frontends like Firestarter, Guarddog, fwbuilder, etc.

There are no known linux viruses in the wild and therefore I don't believe there are any anti-virus programs to protect your linux box. However, there are some antivirus programs like ClamAV, Avast for linux, AVG for linux, etc. available that scan for Windows viruses so that you don't pass them on to your Windows friends via email, etc.

This occured after the cd was ejected, when the installation was over. I suspect the cd was acting pretty dodgy, as the win xp, that was on the machine just before, the linux installation, stated, the drivers, for both the dvd and cdrw, was corrupted. So I believe the cdrw, was incorrectly mounted, during installation, and tried installing debian linux, round six times. still same messages. I ended up installing Vista Premium on it instead. Debian Linux, was instead installed on my Compaq laptop with no installion issued and errors. The Linux runs beautifully on my laptop instead, where Win98 was on the laptop earlier. I would like input on the hdd: drive not ready for command issue I experienced.
Perhaps, the hdd: might be ready to fail? Perhaps, Perhaps not. Who knows. Thanks for the reply, I suspect the cdrw is in-compatable with this Linux system. Now I'm onward, to experience working with Linux on my Laptop now. AS for the sys log and such, thats unknown, as again, I installed Vista Premium, on the machine that had these issues, explained, therin. Thanks, and have a blessed day. Keiti.
