linux completley freezes suse 8.2

Ok i know nothing about linux or unix. but I was asked to set up this linux as a production server for some application. So this box already has suse 8.2 on it.

Well i feel like a complete idiot trying to tinker around in what may as well be a chinese OS it is so foreign to me.

I get apache installed and running, php, mysql
the last thing i want to do is
use samba so that i can move and edit files on the linux box from the safety and comfort of my windows pc.

well after going through too many google links, i finally found this haven of knowlledge and goodwill .. and im warming to the idea of maybe , possiblly trying to learn how to use this linux thing.

so now for my first trial.
1. i dont know what i did
2. i messed around with smb.conf
3. oh at work, we dont have workgroups, so i put our domain name where it asks for work group.. told you im an idiot.
4. now linux keeps freezing
5. freezing for 10-15 mninutes... with the hard disk light flickering ..like its doing something.
6. i dont even know how to ctrl alt delete. so i just hit hard reset
7. now everytime i have to hit reset after just like 2 minutes because it freezes.

so finally.
is there a better way to stop this viscous cycle of hard resetting and freezing?

help please.

How ya doin,

could you post your /var/log/messages file? or better yet, since its so big, email it to jinksys444@charter.net and I could take a look at it. You might also want to post/send a summary of what applications/processes are running on the machine about the time of the crash. Ill do what I can.

hi jinksys.

hmm when i look at var/log/messages using vi.
its not big at all.

since the kde interfae keeps locking up i have been signing into "failsafe" mode and continuing doing my samba changes to the smb.conf

if i open up mozilla from the failsafe mode... i can come back here, but how do you copy and paste something from shell to here?

and...please bear with me... how do i get the process list to show?

thanks..

Well tell me, does the computer only freeze in the KDE interface, or does it freeze no matter what interface you use?

rvn 10-07-2003 04:55 PM

it only freezes in kde and windowsmaker , the only 2 that i tried.

and also sometimes when i go into kde
the root folder just starts popping up like crazy.. like 60 of them.. before it freezes.

when this happens. the whole desktop takes on a differnet look
(except for the taskbar)

what would you want to see?
i can get into kde for about 2 minutes and send post the things you need before it freezes.

So it doesnt freeze in failsafe mode? That must mean it is a window manager problem..hmm

rvn 10-07-2003 05:01 PM

it doesnt freeze in fails safe mode.
only in kde
for example.

i restarted the computer (hard reset)
signed in as root
went into kde
and opened mozilla
surfed over to linuxquestions...
got back to this thread..
then after about 1 - 2 minutes...

everything even the clock is frozen
and theh hard disk is going nuts.

im gonna have to hard reset again cause nothing else works.

rvn 10-07-2003 05:05 PM

it didnt do this until today , when i tried to set up a folder share with samba

could it be because of samba? and the smb.conf (incorrect settings)

rvn 10-07-2003 06:17 PM

well dont laugh.
i changed keyboards and the freezing problem went away.

which leaves me now with just one last problem

cannot see the linux box on the network.

our work , everycomputer is part of the domain.
but there is no workgroup.

so in teh smb.conf file i put that the workgroup = DOMAINNAME (all caps)

when i look in my window network neighborhood, i dont see it.

any ideas?

jinksys 10-07-2003 06:25 PM

Well thats good :)
Honestly, I dont have the clear answer for you about the domain problem. Id recommend posting a thread in the networking forum, youll probebly get a quick response there.
