linux commands
 

There are some commands that do not work in XWindows and I can not figure out why (ifconfig, linuxconf). I can log in as a user or root and I still get the same problem. I can get linuxconf to work if I enter "linuxconf -auth", but I feel that I have some other problem or oversight. Any comments, please. These commands do work as long as I am in runlevel 3, just not runlevel 5.

all commands should work in an X windows environment unless you have your DISPLAY variable wrong

export DISPLAY=:0

after doing this, try to run the commands, if this still doesnt work, you can switch to a text console like in runlevel 3 by using ctrl+alt+f1
