linux boot partition too far in the HD

XP installed on hda (NTLDR on the MBR)
RH installed on hdb1 (GRUB on the first sector)
Copied the linux boot sector onto a file and added it to boot.ini on windows.
Now when I choose Linux in the NTLDR I get a screen which says GRUB and it gets stuck.

From what I understand this is happening because the boot partition for linux is beyond the first 1024 cylinders. Is that true and if so hope can I fix it?

Just read your own statements...
Your Problem is something else, search these fora for "GRUB" and boot problems or some such, you should find something about using GRUB in interactive mode...
