Linux Backup

Hi All,

I have installed a linux fileserver and details are...

OS : Redhat Linux 7.3
Tape Drive : 4 mm 20/40GB DAT (internal)
Tape Drive : Compaq StorageWorks 8/16 Cartridge AutoLoader

My user data is very critical, I want to depend on the backups in case of disasters.

My requirement is to take full backup once in a week i.e. Sunday and incremental backups from Mon-Sat. Apart from the users data, I want to take OS backup and this should be useful in case, if my linux corruption. I am providing df -k output for reference.

Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 247919 169964 65155 73% /
/dev/sda5 294367 8482 270685 4% /home
/dev/sda3 294399 191963 87235 69% /opt
none 639736 0 639736 0% /dev /shm
/dev/sda8 100692 4669 90824 5% /tmp
/dev/sda2 1661640 1312636 264596 84% /usr
/dev/sda7 147186 41659 97928 30% /var
/dev/sda9 100796492 71252632 24423624 75% /users
/dev/sda10 201587196 52573804 138773316 28% /shared
/dev/sda11 3024016 1467956 1402444 52% /hr
/dev/sda12 10080332 5242192 4326080 55% /finance
/dev/sda13 2015984 995316 918260 53% /marketing
/dev/sda14 2015984 643460 1270116 34% /tax

Please advise me on the following questions.

1. Which backup is best for OS
i.e. / , /home, /opt, /tmp, /usr, /var ? In case of linux courruption, I should be in a position to recover the OS with minimum effort.

2. Which backup utilty is the best for full backup & incremental i.e. /users, /shared, /hr, /finance

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the 'dump' command. Also do a search on this site. There are a lot of threads with different peoples opinions on how to backup.(Certainly don't listen to just me...see what others have to say)
