Linux as a Server

Hello Linux experts,

I am a newbie in Linux. I want to get started on linux servers. I am sure it has been asked before but since this is my first post so i would like to get started from here.

I would appreciate if i could be recommended a distro that would run on vm on a laptop that will not bring down my windows os and other apps.

Thank u in advance.

I've had no problems running CentOS (5, I've not tried 6) on Windows 7's Virtual PC environment. Many others will advise use of virtualbox or vmplayer as the host platform.

It depends entirely on the capabilities of your laptop. Without knowing what your laptop can support, it's impossible for anybody to answer your question.

Hi Mahmood637,

Welcome to Linux Questions. Well, the first Linux Server I installed was Ubuntu Server. It was fairly easy to configure and manage. By default, it does not come with GUI; however, you can either install a desktop environment such as K or Gnome. Or you can install Webmin.

I run Centos 6.5 on VMware player. It runs ok.
