linux anti-virus
 

Hi all. I know it's hard to get a linux virus, but I'd rather have an anti-virus then not. I tried to install the one that comes with suse 10. I went to yast to find one and got "anti-vir". I installed it and nothing appeared on my system??

Also, if there is free scanner out there with updating, post here or private mail me.

We are still waiting for linux viruses out in the wild. Until we have some I doubt you will see linux AV software. The linux AV software you get now is for windows viruses to be scanned for on mail servers and so forth.

It'll be there, it just won't have installed anything in the program menu, meaning you'll have to run it from the command line.

There is a very good anti-virus program out there that scans for any virus that is known about, whether it be for Windows, Linux, MacOS etc (the last 2 are highly unlikely unless directly targeted) but it's best to check anyway.

It is called ClamAV. It's fabulous. It is designed for use on the command line, it is very easy to understand and script, but also complex enough for full-on geeks to have a chew at.

There are also several GUI's for it, ClamTk for GNOME, and KlamAV for KDE. I have ClamTk and it is very easy to install.

If you are using a package manager to install ClamAV you should be OK, but if you are doing it from RPM's or source, there are several instructions you need to follow carefully (i.e. ClamAV needs a new user and group, clamav:clamav) to run securely and stop any normal-user infestations from affecting the anti-virus process (unless it manages to get root access).

Also, take a look at a firewall if you don't already have one, I recommend Firestarter, although i've found it a bit tricky to get the daemon to run as root on boot-up.

Grisfot (wwwDOTgrisoftDOTcom) can't post a real URL until I hit 5 posts, which produces "AVG" anti-virus makes a linux version. They have a free version for home use (linux, windows, and I think Mac). Several of my friends run it on Windows and like it. I tried to install it on Fedora Core 4, but my libraries are not compatible (I think they are too new for AVG), so I never did get it to install.

I have avg for windows and it's great. This linux avg is real hassle to install. I get the file and click on the rpm. Now it asks for pygtk2.0 and pygtk2.0-libglade

I'm using suse linux 10. The first I tried to install, but didn't do anything(from linux source disks). The second doesn't exist. I can't find a rpm file listed on the python.org site to install it. What now?

ClamAV is also a good virus scanner, but it's command line though.

I just use IPtables for my firewall. There's a GUI called Gaurddog that makes it really easy to setup too.

Ok, here's a good workout for the experienced users.
I'm a complete idiot, and i've only been using Linux for about 2 weeks. One of the reasons for the migration from XP is because I hated how XP would control things and start/stop programs or scripts without my direction and the other being I got tired of viruses and hackers. I have done a full switch so i'm not running a dual boot, and as I said, i'm extremely new. As implied from morrolan, better safe than sorry. I just downloaded clamAV and Guarddog, I want these up and running before I start using an IRC program becuase i'd be a fool not too. I have no idea how to install and run them so any advice would be helpful.
I'm running Fedora Core 5 but i don't know how to check kernal versions. My brother-in-law who got me started cannot be contacted at the moment so i'm out of answers.

A note on the Guarddog, I only found a FC3 version on their site, is there an update somewhere or how would i get the library to work properly?

I know it takes time to get responses because it's all voluntary. I'd be greatful for any helpful advice on this topic.
