linux and filmstrips (e.g. youtube) - how do I do this?
 

What tools do I need to view youtube filmstrips in linux? It seems that Fedora does not promote these by default. I tried downloading Adobe Flash Player but I just hang. In fact lots of plugins don't work (e.g. the one to the right here on this screen says to "click here to download plugin" - but then when I try it, it says none available. It seems a shame to turn on a machine to just view youtube.

Well it was hanging on the download, but I managed to finally get around that by doing it another way. I have the most recent adobe reader, adobe flash and real player installed. But Firefox still does not let me play a youtube video (says I need JSP enabled (tis done and I use all the time) OR get most recent adobe flash player - which is installed) - either firefox does not know how to find it or it does not agree with me. The only addon not available for Linux is shockwave by Adobe.
According to theory, I have everything - but firefox cannot find it. Do I restart the box? (should not have to) restart Firefox? (also makes no sense to me)

Could it be that you have installed them but that firefox can't find them? I recently installed the spanking new sun java plugin for 64-bit browser (ohh, how I have waited for that one...) and I had to create a link manually. I run Debian and there the plugins (or links to them) are in the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory. What are your contents in that directory (assuming it's the same under Fedora, which, btw I presume is a 32-bit system, right?)

Does flash plugin show up in firefox..from tools>addons>plugins??if it doesnt you can just copy the libflashplayer.so to firefox plugin folder..when i install flash i just copy the .so to /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugin /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins /usr/lib/firefox/plugins
iceweasel is what Debian calls its firefox version..also is it a 64 bit system??theres a flash for 64 bit sytem

But I am running 64bit everything, the following three things show up in my /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory (nphelix.so nphelix.xpt nppdf.so); the following show up in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins - perhaps more interesting):

I have installed both Adobe reader and Adobe flash player but see NO libflashplayer.so anywhere (using find).
I installed helix (real player) yesterday and suspect it should show up in lib64 for use not in lib.
YUM says both adobe products are already installed if I try to re-install them.

So do I copy the helix links to /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins from the 32 bit version?
Where else can I look for the adobe libs? And if I find them, where do I link them?

By the way, the only thing that shows up in tools-addons is DOM inspector so I am sure firefox does not know I have installed things.

Are the plugin versions you installed the 32 bit version or 64 bit..if your trying to use 32 bit plugins on a 64 bit system i believe you need to use nspluginwrapper..

But there are 64 bit versions of flash and realplayer..

I have installed nspluginwrapper and linked in the helix stuff for that (did not find 64bit version so using 32 bit is fine). Every time I try to install 64 bit flash player, yum says it is installed BUT there is not libflashplayer.so anywhere. Should I hand install flash player from a tar ball? And, each time I try to play a youtube strip, I get the message that either Java script is not installed (not true as I have web apps using it in firefox) or flash player is not installed (and yum says it is - I see libflashsupport.so but not ..player.so). I suspect that I am very close, but keep hitting the head on the wall. Finally, firefox->tools->add-ons still yields no new results (still see DOM Inspector but that is all after I did TWO nspluginwrapper commands to link in helix and flashsupport - latter was probably the wrong thing to do) Thanks.

Just uninstall exisiting flash..and use tarball to copy libflashplayer.so to your plugin folders..Thats how i do it..and every browser i have tried..iceweasel,epiphany,konqueror,Opera..have worked that way..rather than go making links every where.its just easier to copy them to the plugin folder..Like i said..on every browser i have used flash works...well ..except konqueror..but that i think is a bug with latest flash..it would play and you would here sound..but instead of video it would be just a white background where video should be..but from searching that on google i think its a flash bug..
