the same reason why you can download android .apk files on an ipad but they probably wont install.

does aol provide a linux version of whatever you are trying to download (maybe check your package manager). even if they did why would you want it; i dont want to sound conceited (but i will anyways) aol is kinda' passe` these days ?

Just because you can download something does not mean it will work (the same is true of downloads on windows, you can get something that will not work)

AOL will not run on Linux natively so I checked the WineDB to see if maybe it can run under that but it rates as garbage as you can see from the link.

As I tried to explain to you in your other thread windows applications do not natively run in linux and vice versa. In a nutshell windows executables use the PE format and linux executables use the ELF format

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Executable
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executa...inkable_Format

It is possible to run some windows applications via wine but AOL does not.

https://www.winehq.org/

Downloading is just a matter of copying 1s and 0s from one computer to another. The operating system does not care.

I don't know about that specific version of AOL, but google 'aol on linux' and you will get all kinds of hits including here at LQ:

I doubt the CD anyone would get would work since it is likely designed to only run on windows.
Glad to see my sister is not the only one still using AOL.
