Linux Advertisement Blocking Program Needed
I admit I have a huge Phobia. I do not like advertisements on the radio, on television, or on the Internet.
I need one or two or three or four Linux Ad blocking programs to stop my headaches. Surely someone has developed such programs by now. Has anyone any suggestions, Please???? |
if your using firefox there is an extension to do that, its called adblock. There is also one to update its filters automatically.

Thanks Jollyjoice,
I use Epiphany and Opera as browsers. I have never tried to use the Gnome desktop Firefox browser because both of my ISP's are under contract with Microsoft who has recently found ways to bamboozle the Firefox browser causng Firefox to revamp their software all the time now. |
Not sure how similar Mozilla is to FF in terms of hijacking, but somewhere out there there is an adblock plus for the mozilla suite.
|
you could also filter all your port 80 traffic thru dansguardian, a web content filter. It catches a lot of ads, even the embedded ones that don't pop up, or under... :(

Thank You Edcutis!!
|
opera has pop up blocking, even though microsoft has found wasy to bamboozle firefox the only version they would change would be the windows version as it only directly relates to product interference for windows, linux version should remain untouched.

Hi Edcutis,
I am afraid Dansguardian and its links shook me up. I do not want to risk putting any programs on top of this supersensitive Suse Linux 10 operating system. Checking out all of that stuff gave me an idea though. As told to me earlier within this forum; I have to use a U.S. Robotics 5683 external modem to connect my Linux operating system to the Internet. If U.S. Robotics has filters for its external modems they should should be able to help me. I have Emailed them seeking help. Thank You for your input!! |
I'm guessing you know very little about computers.
First off, Firefox is from Mozilla, not GNOME. Second, you can't filter adverts using an external modem, thats just silly. Third, just use Firefox with adblock. Fourth, just use Firefox with adblock, 'cause it does also work in Windows (I'm using it right now, yes I know, should be using Ubuntu, haven't got round to setting up Internet connection yet). Last, but not least, when the adverts come on on the radio block your ears, when on TV either block your ears and close your eyes or if you have a PVR (which I doubt) pause, wait a while and fast-forward through them. If that doesn't cure your headache, take some Panado. |
My computer knowledge is limited.
I do know that Mozill and firefox are the same company. I know that the KDE and Gnome desktops are part of my SUSE Linux 10 operating system. i also know that some modem manufacturers do make filters for their products. I am afraid I do not need chemicals or dry wit, please!! |
Filters for link/physical-level packets maybe, but filtering adverts isnt done at the link/physical level of the IP protocol stack, i think. Good luck finding one.
|
U.S.Robotics states that its AdSubtract software is only available for windows.
|
I've always used the built-in method for blocking ads with Firefox ie right-click on the picture and click on 'Block Images from ...' .
Works every time :) |
There is a very simple way of doing this. Copy the list of servers from this page and then paste them into your /etc/hosts file. How it works is when the link comes up on the page it is pointed to localhost and doesn't display. (provided you don't have an Internet server on your system in which case it displays the index page)
|
Who cares? They're ads. Get a life.
