you must not use the /// (which makes no sense). If your're in your Homedirectory (your current working-directory is home) and you use Firefox as a Browser, then the Downloads-directory resides in home and you may use the command:

Bruce you gave me the best hint with the commands you asked for : pwd and ls.
Because I am an old Dos crack and soon I was getting into it! Thanks a lot for this. Everything started to make sense....

The main problem "we" had was, that the file tar.gz I downloaded was actaully sitting on my extention card BUT was also displayed in the home Download directories - maybe a glitch because after removing the card and a new download of the tar.gz file the two directories have different contents. HOWEVER. I then went into "DOS-Mode" and just started to love it :-).

Can somebody, following on this thread, help me with a similar problem. After following this thread, i am also trying to update flash player. I have done everything on here, but when I go to my terminal and use the command line "mv Downloads/libflashplayer.so usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/", I get the message file not found? Anybody else help?

I have tried every single thing in this thread. None of it worked for me. I bought the Acer 18 months ago and thought I'd done the right thing as I thought it would be great to have no Windows on a computer. I was soooo wrong. It was great until I needed to update anything, like Flash player. This was my first and last ever linux machine.

I thank all of you who posted info in this thread but I'm getting a windows netbook as soon as I can. I never ever thought I'd say that in my life.

Does anyone want to buy an Acer One with Linux of some kind in it? It works perfectly it just needs the flash player and Browser and stuff updated.

Please, remove "linpus lite" - it's a piece of crap: download and install it: http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook or http://peppermintos.com/ (software updates are easily/automatically made in a real distro - what "limpus lite" is not)

* you hardware is OK, the problem is just in your S.O.: you don't need to sell it

I agree about the hardware, I have a few Acer laptops. If I knew how to delete the OS and install a new one I would.

I have installed the new flash update but cannot find where the new *.so file is! When I look at the mozilla/plugins directory the *.so file appears to still refer back to the old flash, which is housed in /usr/lib/flash-plugin.

hulu still won't play for me!

-how can I check if the *.so in my mozilla/plugins is current? if it isn't current, how do I find what i installed and make it current?

Also, does ubuntu work? I really hate how broken my acer one is. I had it working okay but then had to reformat the drive with the boot disk, and now can't get rar files to work on Xarchiver, can't get vlc installed, and flash won't work so can't watch hulu!

you'd be better off to post which distribution you're using. If there's a symbolik link in mozilla/plugins which refers to the libflashplayer.so, you'll have to find this one usingthen cd into the directory with the libflashplayer.so and again execute "ls -l" you may see the installation-date of the file.

If it is no new one, I'll recommend to use the way I described earlier in this thread: download the latest flashplayer from adobe, unpack it and copy to the plugins directory.

A lot of times us newbies download a file and because we came from windows we don't actually realize that in linux we can manipulate or atleast know where our files are downloaded to by opening browser click the edit tab, preferences tab and downloads

Thanks for this thread, which addressed the exact questions I was having! I've gotten this far in my quest to update flash player on my AAO with Linpus lite...

There is already a 'libflashplayer.so' file in that directory, dating from January of this year. So the terminal asks "mv: try to overwrite `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so', overriding mode 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)?" I type in 'y' and hit enter, and it says "mv: inter-device move failed: `Downloads/libflashplayer.so' to `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so'; unable to remove target: Permission denied". (also tried with cp instead of mv, no luck) I'm also unable to paste into that directory, or right-click to delete the existing 'libflashplayer.so'. When I check the Permissions tab of the Properties on the file, I can't change of the options. How can I get permission? Or is there a better way to do this?
