Linpus Linux Lite Acer Aspire One Desktop Failure (Looks like a zebra)

Hi

Like the title says my desktop looks like a zebra (black and white horizontal stripes) with what looks like dead pixels in, but they are not dead as i am posting this from the same laptop and it looks fine. When i try to open a file after searching through the search bar, it says "nautilus file manager is not running". How do i get it running and is there a way to fix my desktop without reloading Linux onto my laptop?

Chris

Code:

Don't zebras have vertical stripes?
</unhelpful comment>

Okay, hit control+alt+backspace, and if that doesn't help, attach a copy of
Code:

/var/log/messages

You can try running
Code:

nautilus
from a terminal window. What happens?

You know, several acer laptops that I have purchased for friends came with Linpus and it always made me think that it was an Acer joke. I have no idea if it is any good, but from the weirdness you are experiencing I would install a different Linux distrobution such as OpenSUSE, Mint or Ubuntu. Itīs up to you to continue battling with a crippled OS.

i don't get this, found a way into the files, but now says the executable file doesn't exist :S

You need to sudo cat, or sudo cp /var/log/messages

Like the forum says, im a real noob, what does this mean? http://i757.photobucket.com/albums/x...creenshot2.png

Sorry, my mistake there. Cat 'concatenates' files, in this context it will write them to the screen; you pass the filename as an arg.

Code:

sudo cat /var/log/messages

Forgive the double post;
Where you've opened nautilus above- nautilus is a file viewer, like the view you're viewing the nautilus directory with.

Ok so if nautilus isn't running, what file viewer am i using to view it? So Confusing. I would just re-install the OS but i can't find the disc, will have another look but :(

EDIT: Found the disc, how do i put it on a pen to boot from? I don't wanna have to install the disc on another system to do it though.

Why, what was in that error file? Lets try and fix the thing first

cgurrell 03-11-2010 01:55 PM

Error file? there wasn't one, it just said what it said in the screenshot, is there a way to get an error code?

I think I may have the same problem, but only next week will I get the Netbook in my hands. I will then try to solve this problem and post the solution (if any) here.
