Linpus for a CPU i686 (Acer Aspire 1)
My Acer aspire one was one of the first generation mini netbooks /eeepc's ,and the OS was Linpus (fedora) . Someone said I should get rid of it asap and install UNR ,I did but the netbook started to run very slow ,I couldn't use the webcam anymore etc . I have tried so may OS's since then..Puppy Linux, EasyPeasy, Bodhi, but they all run slow and get stuck easily and I never got the webcam working so I regret the loss of the original OS (Linpus) I lost the mini cd ,and now can not find the distro anywhere ,the new Linpus distros are for 64-bit CPU ,but I need a distro that is suitable for a CPU i686 and preferably the old style Linpus that gets the webcam to work and runs fast without problems, who knows where I can find the mirror to a Linpus suitable for a i686 CPU ?

Try downloading debian with XFCE or LXDE

I have used antiX on those little netbooks.
There is now also mx linux, which more or less had those netbooks in mind as the purpose to building MX. Both have worked all around on the aspire ones that are in the house. The cameras as well though I cannot say for certain that yours will work. Chances are high though as I am not the only one who runs aspire ones on the forums. Both are 32 bit so no problem there for trying them out. I do agree that the original Linus lite that was on them was good and simple to use but I think of it as very limited as well. If you really wish to have it back it may be worth talking to rust_collector on the antix forum or irc. I seem to recall him offering to send me a copy of that original os in the past. |
thanx ! both ,for the usefull tips! I will ask rust-collector on the antix forum if he still has that copy .Yes ,it was indeed limited, but I found out that the capacity of the hardware is too little to do more than that linpus OS offered, and for email, browsing and using cheese (webcam) it is just fine ,and now the frustration is many times more than before because with other distros it keeps getting stuck and running very, very slow. If I can not get back the original Linpus ,I will try Antix/Mx .

If you hang around the antiX / Mepis forums some more / read some posts with inxi outputs, you would probably be supprised to find out that there are quite a number of people with those netbooks! As you now know RC has one, I have 3 myself / a couple others that I installed antiX for, another who also frequents here has one or two, the guy with the originating idea for MX has one, and there are a number more to be found over there. Enjoy the fresh abilities you once again have! Dave |
You can download antiX here.

Unfortunately ,the old Linpus OS seems not be working anymore (tried a bootable iso but it doesn work...now I installed MX14 non pae /antix but I have 1 issue ;I can not find the package Cheese (to get the webcam working and I like this program a lot,it was also in the old Linpus os),do you know how I can install it ? or does it have another name in synaptic ? (didn find it there) ,greetings ,Cammie |

type: apt-get update (press enter) type: apt-get -f install cheese (press enter) and say "Y" to installation. Seems to be there for unstable, testing, and stable... Another that seems to be frequently used amoung the forum is guvcview which may be installed by default... |

You are going to make me boot up my Acer Aspire One and test out that statement. Just for grins and fun though. I always preferred guvcview to cheese in my AntiX installs but I realize personal tastes are personal, ya know. :) 2NDV Edit: I broke out my Code:
$ inxi -zv7 Closed advanced settings and hit play button. VLC showed my rugged mug on the screen So not sure where you went wrong. |
