Linksys Connection

Evening All
I am currently running Ubuntu 7.10 on a rebuilt Compaq Presario and Windows XP on a Toshibe Satellite. When operating individualy I can connect to the internet no problem. I am using Comcast Cable.

When I try running both machines thru a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 5 port switch. I can not connect with both machines.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

You either need a NAT router or use internet sharing on one of the boxes and share the internet through a second NIC card. A NAT router would also function as a firewall. Unless you have a corporate account, the Cable Modem will just offer a single IP address. A NAT router will masquerade the IP addresses of your LAN and translate it to a single internet IP.

Internet sharing will do the same thing, but do it in the computer.

Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Routers

I am using a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Routers with 4-Port switches, it gives me 4 Internet connections at once (actually more, I have another switch attached as well).

Only difference between our tools is you have one more switch, but no router inside. I suggest you get a Linksys router. You could still use your old switch to branch out even more Internet connections.

You need a internet router as the others have suggested.

The Linksys WRT54G is the best deal around. You 4 ports plus a wireless access point for around $35 US.
