Lindows!!!

My first post so dont shoot me for it if its in the wrong place :p

I have just installed this on a spare hdd I have (trying to break away from micro$haft products)

I have never seen a machine running linux let alone use one (tho I have seen screent shots) so i am not at all familiar with how it works :( what I wud like to know is are ther ne sites apart from lindows.com that offer help support and advice ??

My main concern at the moment is that I cant get it to work with my alcatel speedtouch usb modem ?? Tho I did find summit in lindows.com that said I need a temp net connection (i.e dialup) to be able t d/l a file to make it work. My problem here is that I dont have a 56k modem (I have however d/l a file for my modem but is for linux and I aint got a clue on installing it :( ) and I feel that once i get it running on the net I can figure it all out for my self. so at the moment I am swapping hdd so I can get on net have a look around for some advice then change hdd again to try the things i have found.

Hello smurf2k. Welcome to LQ.org.

That speedtouch usb modem might be a no-go. Use the search facility on this site to hear what other people did about it.
Move that downloaded file for your 56k modem to your linux partition or linux box (it will fit on a floppy) and tell us what the file suffix is (.rpm or .tar.gz probably).

It might be a good idea to think about buying a linux book the learning curve can be steep initially, but we're all happier for it :D.

the file I d/l was for my stusb not a 56 and yes it is a .tar.gz extension.

when I open the folder there are 3 more folders
1. src
2.doc-linux
3.doc.bsd
then there are 13 more files in there which occording acording to lindows are either shell scripts plain text.

Also can u recommend a good ( and not to mention cheap :) ) book to buy and were to buy from either shop or online I am in the U.K btw

i was just quietly confirmnig your fears, it's fine... and it now IS in the right place...

Don't worry about acid's tone - he comes across that way but doesn't mean it.

Unfortunately, cheap technical books are like cheap mouthwash - they don't work and make you feel like you shouldn't have bothered.

If you got a free OS, you really could consider buying an o'reilly book - I still have all of mine. 'Running Linux' is a good one.

Did you look around the forum for what others said about the speedtouch modem?

You need USB support in your kernel. Look at the output of the command:

dmesg

and see if it says anything about USB. If it does, look at the doc.linux file buy doing

more doc.linux

and see what the guidance is for installing the module.

acid_kewpie 11-24-2002 06:14 AM

try this one... http://thirtythreeandathird.net/redh...eashed.tar.bz2 complete, decent book. my domain's nameservers are a bit shafted right now though... mightn't work.

smurf2k 11-24-2002 06:30 AM

looks like I am gonna have to get me a book and start learning and fast. As I have no-idea how to look in a kernel or how to install a module

My guess is a piece of Hardware on your system is not compatible. Yesterday I tried to install Mandrake 9.0 on my Alienware with a next generation Gigabye motherboard, at start of install, everything went black, computer died, and my cap and scroll lights started blinking on my keyboard. Someone told me it might be firewire but I disabled it and still no install. My guess is Linux doesn't support 333 fsb or USB 2.0? Anyway I then installed it on my laptop without a problem, just have to get wireless linksys card working and i'm all set. Still dissappointed I couldn't install it on the system I wanted to......

I dunno, Linux of all types seems to be very picky with supported hardware. My problems were with Mandrake 9.0:Pengy:

speedtouch does work, take a look at:
http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/howto.html
The one I got it to work with is in Dutch, but you might give it a try since the commands are the same:
